Fred Meyer Vs. Walmart:The Shopping Preferences of the Overly Large Pregnant Lady

While I may have paid a little more today in groceries at Fred Meyer, it may have been worth it.  The entire 35 minutes I walked around the store not a single person commented on my belly, except to ask me if I was expecting a boy or a girl (using the word "expecting" is entirely appropriate to me as opposed to "Whatch ya havin?" or "You pregnant?" ugh!)  Fred Meyer obviously must have an entirely different class of people frequenting it.

I didn't hear, "Look out! It's must be in the water!," followed, of course, by snickers from various people that could overhear the obnoxiously loud person  or "You look like you are about ready to pop!" which the people that work or shop at Walmart feel like is not only kind to say to a pregnant person but appropriate conversation to have with a complete stranger.

In fact now that I think about it, the ONLY place I have had a stranger put their hand on my belly was at Walmart!  And when I asked the lady to remove her hand from my belly she actually had the nerve to act like the one offended.  Freaking Walmart!

If only I had tons of money to spend on food, all my shopping trips for the next 3+ weeks would be at Fred Meyer.

But since that isn't reality I will just have to endure.

Perhaps I should just make a game of it and see if anyone will top the crappy, I mean crazy, I mean well intended comments above.

  1. Oh, wow, some people have no class! I had no idea pregnant women went through this and it doesn't make me look forward to the time when I'll have to put up with it! I can't believe Baby Kinsley will be here next month, I'm so excited for you guys and to meet her!

  2. I LOVE Fred Meyer. I used to always shop at WinCo because they are so much cheaper until their produce went downhill. I started going to Fred Meyer because they were close for all of my produce. The more I shopped there they more I loved it. Not only do they give out free cookies to kids (incentive to get Benton to go to the store with me) they also have Playland. Benton can play there for an hour while I shop, it is glorious. I still go to WinCo once a month or so to buy non perishable cheaper.

And here is my Walmart story, it is good. When Emmett was about a month old we went out to Walmart. We were only picking up a few things and wanted to get out of there so we picked the express lane. We got the slowest lady around. As she begins scanning our items she asks me how old my children are. That's normal, but what followed wasn't. She then said, "I just lost mine." She proceeded to tell me that she miscarried at 6 weeks and because she didn't know if it was a boy or a girl she named him/her Jordan. She was also going to get the name tattooed on her shoulder. The whole thing was awkward, what did she want me to say? I felt bad but a checker shouldn't share things like that, especially in the express lane!

  3. That's horrible and sad. I kind of have a theory that the Express lane really isn't faster, they just put the slow pokes there because they can't handle more than 20 items...seriously. :)
